Scott Carson makes shock start for Manchester City with mixed memories of featuring at St. James' Park

Scott Carson has been handed his Manchester City debut tonight having not featured in the Premier League since playing for West Brom in a 3-3 draw that was coincidentally against Newcastle on Tyneside back in May 2011.

Tonight is his eighth appearance at St. James' Park, a ground where the 35-year-old has never won, having been on the losing side there three times and played out four draws.

His first appearance on Tyneside was for Liverpool in 2005 when United beat The Reds 1-0 thanks to an incredible Laurent Robert freekick.

The game is famous, not only for Robert's stunning winner, but for being used in the final scene of the film 'Goal!' with lead character Santiago Munez CGI'd into the footage in place of Robert.

This fact wasn't lost on Newcastle supporter, and popular social media man, Jonny Sharples :

Speaking pre-match to SkySports Carson admitted he was "over the moon" to get the nod, having believed his Premier League career was over.

Pep Guardiola has rewarded Carson for his support to City's No.1 and No.2 keepers, Ederson and Zack Steffen, whilst also keeping both on ice for the forth-coming Champions League final in Portugal.
