Scott Brown was never going to Rangers instead of Celtic but could've left for Newcastle after a week says ex-Hibs skipper

Former Hibs captain Rob Jones has revealed Scott Brown could have left Celtic after just a week - but he knew he was never going to Rangers.

Brown became a Celtic stalwart after making the £4.4m move to Easter Road back in 2007.

13 years and a mountain of silverware later, the Hoops captain has written himself into the club's history, and legend status will be topped off if he can lead them to record tenth successive title this season.

There was interest from the other side of Glasgow in Brown, who grew up a Gers fan, but League-Cup winning captain Jones said he and his teammates laughed at suggestions Brown was Ibrox-bound.

"I think a few of us took the p*** out of them to be honest,” he todl the Football Daft podcast.

"We all knew he wasn't going to Rangers. I think conversations had been had and questions had been answered with regards to what Scott Brown was doing.

"Remember, Scott Brown nearly went in the January window and he stayed until the end of the Cup final.

"But I knew Scott was going to go to Celtic."

Brown never made the move to England, but he wasn;t without the opportunities, and Jones admitted he could have made the move south after just a week as a Celtic player.

"Newcastle came in at the last minute with an outrageous bid,” he said.

"I think he had only been at Celtic for a week and Newcastle offered to double his money to go there.

"But I think it was all done and dusted quite early."
