Scott Brown given Celtic 'couldn't do it' verdict as notoriously tough player ratings dished out

Any player will tell you that the first thing they look for are the player ratings.

That's true in Scotland, but even more so on the continent where a whole page is devoted to analysis of individual performances.

French outlet L'Équipe can be notoriously harsh, famously giving seven Paris Saint-Germain players a 2/10 after their Champions League collapse against Barcelona.

In Italy the players pore over their pagelle in the Gazzetta dello Sport, the country's biggest-selling sports newspaper.

In contrast to the UK there tends not to be too much variation in the ratings - anything above a 7 can be considered very good, anything below a 5 very bad.

Most of the others are somewhere in between, and if you've been awarded a 6/10 by Gazzetta you've probably had a decent match.

With Celtic taking on Milan last night the ratings were done for Neil Lennon 's side, as well as the manager himself.

Shane Duffy did not fare well, while Moi Elyounoussi was given the coveted 'best' award.

Here's how the newspaper rated the Celtic players.

(Craig Williamson/SNS Group)

Vasilis Barkas

"There were no court martial worth errors, Milan struck in a surgical way." - 5.5

Shane Duffy

"Lennon can be confident that the Irishman has used up all his bonuses in one go because he didn't get one thing right.

"First there was an empty jump on Krunic's goal, then he let Hauge escape for 3-1. In reality he wasn't even good at 2-1." - 4

Stephen Welsh

"The understanding with Duffy is often missing - more than what is permissible - and the two end up getting into trouble." - 5

Kris Ajer

"Now we know well why Milan included him on their shopping list.

"It must be said that even he ended up shipwrecked, but before that he was a dam." - 6.5

Jeremie Frimpong

(Garry F McHarg Daily Record)

"For a good part of the first half he worried Hernandez, then he paid for the drop-off of the whole team." - 6

Scott Brown

"Supposed to be half bulwark and half conductor, but he couldn't do one or the other.

"In the end, we only remember him for a couple of set-tos with Ibra." - 5

Olivier Ntcham

"It's clear that he'd have liked to influence things more but prudence took away that temptation and Celtic missed him." - 5.5

Callum McGregor

"In Pioli's opinion he was the player to fear ahead of the game.

"In the end the Scottish mezzala gave the Rossoneri boss a not bad gift - he lost Diaz on the goal." - 5

Diego Laxalt

(Craig Foy/SNS Group)

"He put Dalot in serious difficulty but was too soft when he left Castillejo to cross." - 6

Albian Ajeti

"Constant movement that never let Milan settle. In the first half he operated as the second striker, in the second he was through the middle." - 6.5

Leigh Griffiths

(SNS Group)

"In contrast to Ajeti he had very little influence on the build-up and just waited in vain for a good ball that never came." - 5

Ryan Christie

"OK he was struggling with Covid and then only trained in little chunks but it would be reasonable to expect more from someone with his qualities.

"Came on in for the start of the second half but basically didn't exist." - 5.5

Tom Rogic

"It was also thanks to him that Celtic raised their centre of gravity and took courage." - 6

Moi Elyounoussi

(Alan Harvey/SNS Group)

"Lennon threw him on for the beginning of the second half when he needed to strengthen the attack.

"He fulfilled that task wide on the left and found the goal that gave the Hoops an ultimately false hope. He tried another few times but rushed things." - 6.5

Greg Taylor

No rating

Patryk Klimala

No rating

Neil Lennon

"In practice Celtic lasted until the first Rossoneri goal.

"Then they melted and the excellent pressure of the first ten minutes suddenly dissolved.

"The defensive phase must be seriously reviewed, with individual and collective errors." - 5
