Scott Boland retains his spot for Sydney Test, Usman Khawaja returns in place of Travis Head

Boxing Day hero Scott Boland has retained his spot in the Australian team for the Sydney Ashes Test, while Usman Khawaja will return in place of Travis Head.

Josh Hazlewood remains sidelined with a side injury, while leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson has missed out on selection again in favour of the three-pronged pace attack.

Head, who has averaged 62 throughout the series, has been ruled out after testing positive to COVID-19, paving the way for Khawaja to return to the Test team for the first time since August 2019.

Boland's spot in the team had been on the line despite his incredible 6-7 in the second innings at the MCG, however Hazlewood's ongoing injury battle opened the door for the Victorian to add to his debut match.

"You need a disciplined stump-to-stump bowler (at the SCG) and that's what Scotty brings," Australian captain Pat Cummins said.

"Joshy Hazlewood had a few bowls and Jhye (Richardson) was a bit similar.

"(They were) just not quite up to 100 per cent, we gave Joshy every chance we could.

"We just felt like he couldn't quite bowl at full tilt yesterday.

"We're still hoping that he will be right for (the fifth Test in) Hobart, just give him another week."

Sydney Test team: Marcus Harris, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland
