Scott Bain insists Celtic are under more pressure than any team in Europe

Scott Bain insists no team in Europe has to handle more pressure than his Celtic team-mates.

The Parkhead keeper insists the Hoops players deserve a lot more credit for the way they handle the heat and constantly deliver trophies.

Bain was delighted to play a part in the clinching of eight in a row and says his club’s stars merit more recognition.

While he’s been at the club for 18 months, he’s aware individuals like Scott Brown, James Forrest and Mikael Lustig have been working under intense scrutiny for the best part of a decade.

The Mikael Lustig qualities Celtic boss Neil Lennon says make defender a must keep

Others have also coped with the massive burden of expectation throughout the run and stepped up to the mark regularly.

Bain said: “Across Europe, you don’t play with a team with more pressure on them than Celtic, 100 per cent.

“I played a minimal role compared to the other boys and they really need to get more credit than they have been getting.

“Time and time again this team just comes up trumps and shows how strong mentally they are.

“They are miles ahead of everyone in terms of their mental strength.

“When the going gets tough and everything is getting thrown at them, they come through adversity every time.

“We beat Kilmarnock 1-0 at home and it wasn’t good enough. We have seen people say how it’s not been the same, how we’ve not been achieving what we’ve achieved before, but we still go on. We’re unbeaten, we keep winning.

“The Celtic train just keeps marching on and the lads deserve full credit.

“It’s not about the critics or what people say on social media. It’s not about what people say on TV, it’s about the boys in the dressing room.

“People are going to criticise lads who are attempting to achieve greatness. So far they have achieved stuff that has never been done before.

“In terms of the changing room I think the confidence and the ability never really wavers. The way the boys carry themselves is next level compared to everyone else.”

Bain may play down his role in the success but his numbers are staggering.

His clean sheet at Pittodrie was his 22nd in 26 domestic games and in those games he’s lost just four goals.

Bain has earned his medals in the Betfred Cup and now the Ladbrokes Premiership and the fact both were clinched against Aberdeen has just added to the fairytale.

As a youngster he was rejected by the Dons and said: “It’s amazing. I’ve come full circle. We beat Aberdeen in the League Cup Final and now we have secured the league title at Pittodrie.

PC Mikael Lustig returns as Celtic defender turns up in Home Bargains store

“When I first signed the dream was to play one game and it’s funny how football works. I managed to win the title against the team that let me go as a young lad and told me I wasn’t good enough to play for them.

“It shows a lot of young lads they shouldn’t listen to people, they should just listen to themselves.

“If they are willing to do the dirty work, do the hard work, they can come up trumps.

“Celtic is a fantastic club to be a part of and it’s amazing to be at the pinnacle of Scottish football.”

Bain’s achievements could land him a new contract.

He said: “There is always so much on the line at this club, so it is just a case of me putting all the outside noise and distractions out of my mind and putting in the best performances that I can.

“If a new contract comes up we will discuss it.”

Before then there are still games to win and Bain’s next assignment takes him back to where his Celtic story began.

Just 14 months ago he was plunged into a debut against Rangers at Ibrox and lost a goal inside a minute.

It’s been some turnaround since and he said: “You are never going to be able to believe it if you wrote the dream script about what was going to happen.

“I think the goal in the first 30 seconds actually helped a bit. It took a bit of pressure off us, allowed us to play.

Will Rangers give Celtic a guard of honour? About the tradition and the times it has been blanked

“We went on to what was one of the best wins I have had in a Celtic jersey.

“If anything, winning the title will now allow us to play with a little bit more freedom.

“We will go to Ibrox with a swagger. We have proved we are the best team in the country and no one can touch us. We go again.

“We have still another couple of games to go in the league and it would be nice to get another couple of clean sheets but the whole team needs credit for those stats.

“We defend from the front and do it very well. The back four stop teams getting chances and they deserve a lot of credit. If I am called upon to help I am glad to do so.

”But first we celebrate, enjoy the moment. I know it is a special thing when you win a league. I am grateful I had the opportunity to celebrate with these boys.”
