Scott Arfield Rangers injury doubt for Celtic clash as Gary McAllister provides double fitness update

Scott Arfield faces a battle to be fit for Rangers' derby clash against Celtic on Saturday.

The midfielder suffered an ankle injury against Hibs on Boxing Day as Ibrox no.2 Gary McAllister revealed the club are awaiting scan results to discover the extent of the problem.

But the Canadian is a major doubt for the visit of Neil Lennon's men at the weekend.

Ryan Jack will likely miss derby day too as the Scotland international is still sidelined with an ongoing injury.

McAllister said: "It is obviously difficult to find a facility to get a scan for Scott Arfield (because of the time of year) but he is en route as we speak. We're just waiting for the results to come back.

"It's quite rare to see Scotty lie down on a pitch and be carried off as he's generally very robust, so it was pretty disappointing to see him come off the pitch the way he did. But we're hopeful that the scan will show up better than how it first looked.

"We'll wait purely for the results of the scan (before deciding how long he will be out). That's the position we're in."

First, Rangers will take on St Mirren on Wednesday night and McAllister hopes they use it as a chance to rectify their Betfred Cup exit in Paisley earlier this month.

He added: "We felt it was a real strong three points on Saturday.

"We adapted well and deserved the victory.

"We were disappointed to concede three last time against St Mirren, the entire team has worked to keep clean sheets and we trust the players in another tough match tomorrow.

"It is only natural for a player to want to rectify a result quickly, but we are aware they are in great form and playing with confidence.

"We have to focus on what we do on the night to go and get the right result."
