Scott Allan recalls giving Anelka lifts and training with Lukaku in West Brom days

Scott Allan recalled a surreal three weeks in which he found himself driving Champions League winner Nicolas Anelka to training.

The 28-year-old Hibs midfielder spoke about the fascinating experiences he had playing for West Brom earlier in his career.

Allan gave the insight while being interviewed by Si Ferry, Kevin Kyle and Paul Slane on the Open Goal Keep the Ball on the Ground podcast this week.

And he spoke about the time he was asked to drive teammate Anelka to and from training during his first spell down south in 2013.

He said: "I would drive Anelka in to training for the first three weeks after he signed. He said he didn't want to take his motor in as it was too flashy for West Brom. It was some Ferrari thing. He was coming from Juventus.

"I was just so nervous. Even about what music I would put on. I put on David Guetta – because he's French!"

Allan was working under Roy Hodgson at the time, and spoke about how well he got on with the former England manager.

He felt he had a good chance of making it at the Baggies before the FA came calling for his boss.

He added: "I had a really good relationship with Roy Hodgson. He had me involved. I did well at Pompey on my loan spell, so I was expecting to come back and have a good crack at it, but then the West Brom manager gets the England job."

Among the big names Allan shared a dressing room with was Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, although the playmaker admits he never knew the Belgian would be destined for such big things.

He said: "He practiced every single day. Even after training. He was always doing extra finishing, that's what I'd say about him.

"I don't think you could tell [he'd get to the top] but he just had the work ethic there. It obviously worked for him, West Brom was a good loan move for him. Those boys at Chelsea were going here there and everywhere."
