Scotswood Road in Newcastle closed to traffic due to damage caused by flooding

Part of a main road in Newcastle has been closed to traffic for hours due to damage caused by flooding.

The A6085 Scotswood Road, in Lemington, was closed in both directions due to flooding from Northumberland Road to Scotswood Road.

The route was shut on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rainfall hit the North East and remained closed on Thursday morning so that emergency work could be carried out in the area.

Newcastle City Council is expected to assess the site on Thursday to see when the road can reopen.

The closure came after Storm Christoph caused havoc, bringing rain and snow to many parts of the country.

Several parts of the North East had flooded roads overnight and drivers were being warned to take care.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: "Storm Christoph continues to bring heavy rain and some snow across our region.

"Only travel if absolutely necessary and take extra care. Be aware of standing water on some roads, increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front, and leave extra time for your journey."

Meanwhile, train services were also disrupted on Thursday morning and passengers were being urged not to travel due to poor weather conditions.

Flooding blocked the East Coast Main Line between Darlington and York, with a bus replacement service set up, train operator LNER said.

There were also warnings that services between Leeds and York could be affected, and the line between Rochdale and Walsden in West Yorkshire was also blocked due to floods.
