Scotswood cannabis smoker fined after admitting supplying drug to friends and family

A cannabis smoker has been fined after she admitted supplying the drug to her friends and family.

Police found up to £400-worth of the illegal substance when they executed a search warrant at Dawn Thompson's Scotswood home.

The 56-year-old, also known as Walton, was arrested and told officers the drugs were hers but she did often give some to her family and friends.

A court heard, however, that she hadn't made any financial gain.

Thompson, of Yewcroft Avenue, in Scotswood, Newcastle, has now been fined after she pleaded guilty to possessing a class B drug with intent to supply.

North Tyneside Magistrates' Court was told officers searched Thompson's home on January 28 last year and found cannabis in two bedrooms and the kitchen.

Glenda Beck, prosecuting, added: "The defendant is arrested and, during interview, admitted it was hers and she got it before Christmas.

"She smoked it everyday but also admitted she would give some to her family for no financial gain.

"She also admitted giving it to friends on the same basis."

The court heard that, in total, the cannabis had a street value of up to £400.

John Brown, mitigating, said Thompson, who is on PIP benefit and Universal Credit, smoked cannabis to help with her depression.

He added: "If her family wanted some, the bags were there for them to help themselves."

Fining her £200, District Judge Paul Currer told Thompson: "I accept what you say in relation to using cannabis, however, cannabis is a dangerous drug.

"The fact you had the intention of supplying it to other members of your family, I accept at no cost, aggravates the situation."

Thompson was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
