Scotswood Bridge to be partially closed at the weekend for 'essential maintenance'

Part of Scotswood Bridge will be closed to traffic this weekend for "essential maintenance work" to be carried out.

The bridge will be closed to southbound traffic between 6am and 6pm on Saturday and Sunday (March 13 and 14) while workers replace the expansion joints to the north pier.

The work is expected to last for the full duration of the closures, Gateshead Council said.

Throughout the work anyone wishing cross the river has been advised to either follow the A1 diversion, or for traffic heading to Blaydon from further east, to cross the Tyne at an alternative point.

Repairs to the bridge parapets and maintenance to the street lighting including lamp replacement will also be carried out while the bridge is closed to southbound traffic.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Diversion signs will direct motorists onto the A1 whilst the bridge is closed.

"Regular bridge users will already be aware of the temporary closure signs warning motorists of this weekend’s works were erected last week.

"Gateshead Council apologises for any inconvenience these essential works may cause."
