Scotswood Bridge at a standstill after three vehicle crash on the A695 in Blaydon

Traffic came to a standstill on the Scotswood Bridge after two taxis and a lorry collided in Blaydon.

The A695 Derwenthaugh Road was blocked southbound just after the bridge when the three-vehicle crash happened at around 10.40am on Monday.

Tailbacks quickly built up over the bridge leaving Newcastle and on the Chainbridge Road.

One lane was reopened by police after around an hour and traffic was able to slowly move past the crash in single file.

An ambulance attended the scene but nobody was seriously injured.

One person was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead suffering from chest pains.

The road was reopened just after 12pm after one of the cars was recovered from the carriageway.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 10.45am this morning police received a report of a three-vehicle collision on Derwenthaugh Road in Blaydon.

"The collision between two cars and a heavy goods vehicle took place on the westbound carriageway just south of the Scotswood Bridge.

"The incident caused the road to be closed for a short period of time but it has since been reopened.

"Thankfully nobody was seriously injured in the collision and inquiries into what happened are ongoing."
