Scots yob sellotaped a knife to hand and threatened to 'chop up' police

An unemployed construction worker who Sellotaped a knife to his hand and threatened to "chop up" police in a mid-afternoon standoff, is facing jail.

James Newbigging opened an upstairs window, gave police "the middle finger", and shouted "warrant!" after they arrived at a house in Bo'ness, West Lothian to deal with another matter.

Newbigging, 37, told them to "f*** off", Falkirk Sheriff Court was told, and refused to open the front door.

Officers tried to explain to him whey they were there, but he just shouted: "I'm not even listening to you, I just want to know what weapons you have.

"Come in and I'll chop you up and stab yous."

The court heard that a large crowd had gathered, as it was mid-afternoon.

Newbigging, who appeared to be "in a rage", was then seen through a window "covering himself in an unknown substance", telling police "You won't be able to grab me now".

As the incident continued for over an hour, public order officers were summoned to the scene.

Prosecutor Cheryl Clark said that officers were trying to engage with the accused when they heard "what sounded like Sellotape being wrapped around something".

Newbigging then appeared in the living room area of the house, topless, with one hand hidden behind his back, and began walking towards the patio doors, which were partially open.

Police instructed him show his hands, and an officer put his hand on his Taser.

Newbigging slammed the patio doors and ran back into the house. As he did so, officers noticed he had "a black-handled knife Sellotaped to his hands".

Police in riot gear forced their way into the house, and Newbigging immediately sat down on the stairs and surrendered.

Appearing by video from Low Moss Prison, Newbigging, of Bo'ness, West Lothian pleaded guilty to statutory breach of the peace.

The incident happened on September 20, 2021, in Mingle Place, Bo'ness.

Solicitor-advocate Martin Morrow, defending, said: "Clearly his behaviour was very bizarre."

Sentence was deferred for reports until December 23rd.
