Scots writer wins £25million Netflix deal for comic book empire

Scots writer Mark Millar netted £25million by selling his comic-book empire to Netflix, figures reveal.

The home entertainment giants snapped up the Millarworld publishing company in 2017.

As part of the deal, Millar, 49, originally of Coatbridge, became an executive at Netflix and now creates exclusive comics, movies and TV shows for the firm. His wife Lucy also now works for Netflix.

Newly published accounts for Millarworld show Netflix paid £24.8million to acquire the company’s assets.

Figures also reveal Millarworld made an after-tax profit of £23.3million for the year ended June 30, 2018. The year before, its profit was just £330,000. The accounts state the jump arose from the “disposal of the (company’s) Intellectual Property to Netflix”.

Millar’s superhero comics Kick-Ass, Wanted and Kingsman have all been turned into Hollywood movies.

After signing the Netflix deal, the Millars set up a charitable foundation to redevelop the Townhead area of Coatbridge where he grew up.
