Scots woman tells murder trial she 'froze' watching cousin shoot her fiance dead in bed

A woman told a court she “froze” as she watched her cousin shoot her fiance dead in their bed.

Victoria Woods, 46, claimed James Ferguson, 43, also known as Garland Greene, killed his childhood friend Paul Cairns, 42, at her home in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, on May 24, 2020.

Victoria said in evidence recorded in October due to ill health and played to the High Court in Paisley that a masked Ferguson said: “You were f****** warned” before firing the fatal shot.

She claimed Ferguson, of Kilwinning, was wearing blue overalls, a white face mask and a black beanie hat when he shot Paul.

Asked what happened by prosecutor Alan Cameron, she replied: “I heard a bang and I smelled smoke. I heard Paul go ‘argh’. I just froze when he came in.”

Asked why she thought it was Ferguson, she said: “I know him, he is my cousin, I know his eyes, his voice.”

She denied that she was mistaking the gunman for Ferguson, adding: “I’m certain it was James.”

Ferguson denies murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The
trial continues.
