Scots woman smuggled coke into prison 'over fears boyfriend would kill her'

A woman has claimed she smuggled cocaine into a prison amid fears her boyfriend would kill her if she refused.

Lyndsey Lamont took drugs worth £800 into HMP Greenock, in Inverclyde, to give to her partner Stuart Sharp. She stashed a parcel containing 7.63g of the powder into his waistband while giving him a hug in the visiting area.

Prison guards spotted the handover and took Sharp to a secluded area to be searched. He handed over the package after being questioned.

Security cameras in the hall recorded footage of Lamont passing the drugs. Lamont, 28, from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, claimed she committed the offence because she was afraid Sharp would kill her if she did not agree.

She admitted her guilt at Greenock Sheriff Court during a pre-trial hearing on Tuesday. She was convicted of supplying the drug to Sharp on January 15, 2020.

The court accepted her not guilty plea to giving Sharp a quantity of Class C drug Etizolam, which is commonly sold as valium. Defence solicitor Amy Spencer said Lamont’s relationship with Sharp was “plagued with domestic abuse”.

She added Lamont “was experiencing a high level of coercive control” and “felt pressured due to the control from him”. She added: “She felt relief when prison staff caught her and said she made it as obvious as she could at the time. She was taken advantage of by a violent man.”

Sheriff Sheena Fraser called for background reports ahead of sentencing and adjourned the case.
