Scots Who Wants to be a Millionaire contestant faces £1million question in nail-biting episode

A Scottish Who Wants to be a Millionaire contestant faced the £1million question in a nail-biting episode of the hit ITV quiz show last night.

Andrew Townsley, a retired GP, weaved through 14 questions before walking away with an eye-watering £500,000 – opting to take the money rather than risking it for a chance at the jackpot prize.

The 53-year-old, who has MS, was asked by Jeremy Clarkson in the final question: In the history of motor sport, which of these iconic races was held first? a) Le Mans 24 hours b) Monaco Grand Prix c) Indy 500 d) Isle of Man TT.

However, despite using his phone a friend lifeline, he remained unsure of the answer, and chose to leave with half-a-million pounds.

The episode was filmed towards the end of last year, and Andrew said he'd be keen to use any winnings to travel with his wife.

Andrew, who is from Glasgow, watched the episode from lockdown last night and said: "I felt excited and hopeful when I reached the million pound question. I was obviously disappointed that neither of us felt confident enough to give a definite, and winning answer.

“I said on the show my wife and I fancied seeing Niagara Falls. So, I’d like to plan to visit sights like that where you could get to, in a big old wheelchair. Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat would be fantastic but no longer on our personal list.”

Referring to his own condition, which has deteriorated over time, he added: “I would also like to continue to support charities for example young carers, MS research and The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation, a vasculitis charity.

"Unfortunately my condition means I have to make future plans for my care and this will certainly make planning more straightforward.”
