Scots wake up to blanket of snow as weather warning extended to weekend

Scots have woken up to snow this morning after an amber weather warning was issued across the country.

Temperatures dropped last night across a large section of Scotland.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for snow and ice which could affect driving conditions and cause power cuts.

The warning is in effect until 10am today (Thursday).

Beast from the East 2 fears have been strengthened by a new weather warning for snow and ice in Scotland on Saturday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert and warned of the possibility of travel disruption across the country from 3am - 9pm.

Forecasters are also warning of a small chance of power cuts, injuries form slips and falls on icy surfaces and untreated pavements due to another bout of plummeting temperatures.

This latest warning means the icy conditions and snowfall are expected to continue into the weekend.

A Met Office statement about Saturday's alert reads: "An area of rain pushing eastwards is expected to turn snow in places as it encounters colder air across Scotland and parts of northern and eastern England.

"At first the main hazard may be rain falling onto frozen surfaces leading to ice, especially on higher level routes.

"However snow becomes more likely during the early morning.

"Heavier snowfall is more likely above 200m in Scotland and northern England, where 5-10 cm of snow may accumulate, possibly 20 cm on highest routes."

It comes after Scotland was hit with snow and ice last week as plummeting temperatures sparked a massive freeze.

Freezing conditions were reported to have dropped as low as -15 in Scotland overnight, sparking travel chaos on the rail network.

Bookmakers Coral have slashed the odds on this winter being the coldest in Scotland’s history amid fears of a new Beast from the East.
