Scots vaccinated against Covid 'in hospital with Indian variant'

Scots are reportedly being treated in hospitals with the Indian coronavirus variant, despite receiving their vaccination.

It is understood that this was one of the reasons behind the Scottish Government's recent decision to keep the city of Glasgow in level three lockdown, reports the Daily Record.

A source told the paper how there are around six vaccinated patients who are being treated for complications that are suspected to have been brought on by the new variant, which has been causing devastation in India.

The high-level source said: “At least one person has had two doses. It is part of the reason for the concern.”

Some of the alleged patients are understood to be receiving treatment in Glasgow, which has recently seen a surge in cases.

The news comes as Nicola Sturgeon yesterday announced that both Glasgow and the Moray region of Scotland would be put back into level three lockdown amid fears.

On Friday, Edinburgh Live reported how the Indian variant had been detected in Fife.

NHS Fife says that a cluster of cases linked to the Valley and Templehall areas of Kirkcaldy are confirmed to be the B.1.617 strain. People in these areas are urged to get a test so the health board can ensure no cases are missed.

They say there is no evidence of widespread community transmission, although six people are currently known to have tested positive.

Confirming the news, those at the health board added: "Around 1 in 3 people with Covid-19 don’t have symptoms and we're calling for people in these areas to get tested, help stop the spread, and allow us to find cases that might otherwise be missed.

"A new mobile testing unit based at the YMCA in Hendry Crescent (10AM-4PM) has been made available to people in the Valley, Templehall and surrounding areas
