Scots urged to dispose of rubbish responsibly after 29-year-old sandwich wrapper found on country estate

Scots are being urged to dispose of their litter responsibly after a 29-year-old sandwich wrapper was discovered at a Highlands beauty spot.

Staff at the Mar Lodge Estate, in the Cairngorms National Park, found the plastic food wrapping for the ham and cheese delight underneath a rock on Sunday.

Shockingly, the packet was in surprisingly good condition despite having an expiry date of March 23, 1992 - almost three decades ago.

Sharing a picture of the find, the National Trust for Scotland site have urged visitors to behave responsibly with their rubbish.

They said: “Found this sandwich wrapper under a rock today on the estate. Use by 23.3.92.

“Twenty-nine years later it is still sitting there intact. Plastic doesn't biodegrade, it stays in the landscape for a very long time.

“Mar Lodge Estate is a very special and beautiful place. Please follow the Scottish Outdoor Access code when visiting Mar Lodge, act responsibly and take all litter home.”

The malted bread sandwich cost £1.09 and included a slice of tomato with margarine.

Shocked social media users told of their own similar finds.

One wrote: “Wow. Think I had a packet of crisps from 2002 in my litter pick the other day.”

Another added: “A year or so ago a mate of mine found a perfectly intact prestos bag while working in the Trossachs.”
