Scots urged not to attend 'reclaim these streets' vigils and instead to light candle

Scots are being urged to light a candle and not take part in a public vigil to remember tragic Sarah Everard on Saturday.

A number of 'Reclaim these Streets' events have been organised in Edinburgh and Glasgow tomorrow after the 33-year-old disappeared without a trace when leaving a friend's house in the Clapham area of London on March 3.

Human remains were found earlier this week in the search for the marketing executive. The body found has now been confirmed of Sarah Everard by the Met Police.

During the Scottish Government's coronavirus daily briefing the Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said women should light a candle or engage in social media to remember Sarah.

Freeman said she will hold her own private vigil on Saturday to remember women who have lost their lives to violence from men.

She said: "I will take my own private steps I will light that candle on Saturday night, I will engage via social media to show my frustration.

"I will not join a public vigil, because that risks, everyone to the virus.

"Alll of the women who are feeling angry, afraid, upset - I'm right there with you.

"Please do not have a vigil. Please take the steps that we ask people to do, to show how you feel, but not in a public gathering.

"Don't break the rules, stick with the rules around protecting yourself and others from COVID - light your candle, engage in social media.

"We have not won this argument for decades, there will be opportunities in the months ahead for us to come together and in solidarity with each other and with women who've lost their lives."
