Scots urban explorer died plunging 15ft through skylight after sending video to girlfriend

An urban explorer died when he fell through a skylight at a derelict dairy last summer.

An inquest heard that Ethan Bonnar sent a video of himself to his girlfriend from the roof of the Dairy Crest building in Devon just before he fell.

He plummeted more than 15ft onto a concrete surface and was found 24 hours later, still alive, after a major emergency operation.

The 22-year-old, originally from Dunoon, was flown to hospital but died from his injuries the next day.

Coroner Ian Arrow recorded a verdict of death by misadventure and told his parents: “Ethan was a very content person who clearly loved exploring and I am very sorry to hear of his death in these circumstances.”

Ethan’s mum Cheryl Reynolds appealed to other urban explorers to be wary of the risks, saying: “I just want this message to get out there that these young people just don’t realise how dangerous it is in these old buildings.”

Doctors from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth confirmed Ethan died of a traumatic brain injury.

Toxicology showed he had not been using drugs or alcohol at the time of his fall.
