Scots travelling to London hit by train chaos after damage to overhead wires

Commuters travelling to London from Scotland are facing a nightmare on the railway after damage to overhead lines on the route.

Avanti, who operate services on the West Coast main line, reported the damage near the Lake District at around 12.20pm on Thursday.

Services that operate from Glasgow to London have been severely disrupted as result.

Some trains on the line have been cancelled while others have been forced to terminate at Carlisle.

One person on board the 9.40am train from Glasgow Central told the Daily Record that passengers were stuck between Lancaster and Oxenholme for an hour at around midday.

People on board the train were then put on a 45-minute bus from Lancaster to Preston station before catching a train to London at 6pm.

Passengers are now anticipated to arrive at London Euston at 8pm this evening.

Phil James, director for Network Rail’s North West route, has apologised for disruption.

In a statement, he said: “I’m sorry to passengers being affected by the problems with our overhead power lines between Lancaster and Oxenholme on the West Coast main line.

“Our specialist electrical teams are working to repair the damaged cables. It means the railway is blocked with no trains running at present.

“Please check before you travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk and check with your train operator for the latest travel information.

“We thank people for their patience while we work to get the overhead lines fixed so passengers can get moving again.”
