If you're hoping to holiday close to home this year you're out of luck if travelling to Ireland as Scots heading directly to the Republic of Ireland will have to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.
The news comes after the United Kingdom was omitted from the country’s list of destinations for safe travel.
The Irish Government announced that travellers from 15 countries will not be subject to the fortnight rules on quarantine when arriving in the country.
The list included: Malta, Finland, Norway, Italy, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, Greenland, Gibraltar, Monaco and San Marino.
However, if you happen to be arriving directly from Scotland, England and Wales, you will have to self-isolate under the Irish Government’s rules.
The only exception to the rule will be those crossing the border from Northern Ireland.
The government in Ireland will monitor passengers using an electronic passenger locater form and will test those who have symptoms associated with coronavirus at airports and ports.
Under Scottish Government guidance, you will not need to re-isolate on arrival back to Scotland.
Ireland has one of the lowest rates of coronavirus infection in the European Union with around five cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days.
The list of countries will be reviewed every fortnight, with the criteria for the list based on the number of recent cases and testing regime for each country.
A spokesperson for the Irish Government said: “The pandemic is not over and the public health advice remains the same.
"The safest thing to do is not to travel.”
