Scots tram passenger covered in shattered glass after metal bolt thrown through window

A Scots passenger was covered in shattered glass after a large, metal bolt was thrown through a tram window.

Jake Albinson, 30, from Edinburgh was coming back from visiting family on Tuesday 8 June when the bolt flew just passed his face.

He was sitting on a MetroLink tram near Abraham Moss station in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, according to the Manchester Evening News.

He said: "I have never known anything like it. The noise sounded like a bomb.

"I ran screaming down the tram. When I turned back I saw this item had been thrown through the glass.

"I'm just really grateful it didn't hit my face. I don't know how it missed me. I was very, very lucky.

"If it had hit me in the head it would have knocked me out because it was thrown with such force. I just couldn't believe it."

He was also left with cuts to his hands and fellow passengers told him it was carried out by two teenagers as they passed a car park.

The tram then went to Victoria station where all passengers were asked to leave and it was taken out of service.

Jake added: "I was really shook up.

"I was a bit nervous anyway because it's the first time I've been to visit family since Covid, and you just don't expect something like that to happen."

TfGM’s head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: "I’m extremely sorry to hear about this senseless incident of criminal damage, which not only put passengers at risk of severe injury but also caused thousands of pounds of damage and impacted on services.

"I am very sorry to hear that a passenger was injured and hope that the person makes a full recovery

"All our trams and stops are fitted with CCTV and we will work with the police and do whatever we can to help them find those responsible."
