Scots Tory councillor suspended over Nazi and Black Lives Matter posts quits party

A Scottish Tory councillor who was suspended over a Facebook post about the Nazis and Black Lives Matter has quit.

The Daily Record revealed in June that Colin McGavigan had posted an image of a woman appearing to stand at a Black Lives Matter tribute next to a photograph of a man refusing to give a Nazi salute in 1936.

South Lanarkshire councillor McGavigan revealed yesterday that he had resigned his party membership.

His offensive post compared those who refuse to “take the knee” in support of Black Lives Matter to those who refused to salute the Nazis.

He also made comments about images of Holy Family members with non-white skin.

At the time, McGavigan said of his Black Lives Matter statement: “Of course black lives matter, and all lives matter.”

The Scottish Tories suspended him.

McGavigan, a party member for decades, told the Record he was now sitting as an independent.

He added: “I resigned.

"It went on for five months.

"It went on so long. It was a protest at the party.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Tories said: “Mr McGavigan resigned while an investigation was under way, which meant it couldn’t be concluded.”
