Scots to shiver in 'polar blast' over weekend with snow forecast next week

Shivering Scots were waking up to chilly weather this morning as a "polar blast" slammed into the country.

Forecasters predicted the mercury plunging as low as -2C ahead of a cold week.

There is also a chance of snow in Scotland next week.

Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said Scotland will see a "lovely day" today with "plenty of sunshine" despite sub-zero temperatures giving the first real taste of winter.

McGivern added: "There will also be some showers in northern Scotland, but they are moving away."

He also warned of a few freezing fog patches and frost in southern Scotland.

Most of the rest of the UK will be cloaked in fog today and temperatures will remain cold.

McGivern said: "Two words essentially sum up this weekend - dry and gloomy."

As we head into the early hours of Sunday morning, the minimum temperature is expected to be as low as -2C.

Two weather fronts are bringing a large amount of clouds in the country, with mist and fog seen especially overnight, the forecaster added.

Despite most of the country staying dry, some regions are likely to experience downpours during the day.

Sunday will see less fog around and temperatures will feel a bit milder.

But it looks set to be a brief respite as snow could hit parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland next week.

Much of the UK will see highs as low as 4C or 5C at the start of December.

Weather maps show snowfall could start around December 3 and last for a week.
