Scots to join Christmas Eve bell ring on doorsteps tonight to combat loneliness

Half a million people across the UK have pledged to take part in a Christmas Eve bell ring on doorsteps in a bid to combat loneliness around the festive period.

The movement follows the same idea as Clap For Carers, which saw people pay tribute to key workers at windows and in doorways every Thursday during the first lockdown.

The latest sweet campaign, dubbed the Christmas Eve Jingle, is asking the nation to create a 'wave of bells across the world' to spread festive cheer amid tough lockdown restrictions.

Celebrities including Michael Sheen, Sophie Ellis Bextor, the Royals and various politicians including Boris Johnson will be among those taking part at 6pm tonight.

It's even been endorsed by Captain Sir Tom Moore, who called it "a brilliant initiative at a time where it is really needed".

Actor Michael Sheen said: "This Christmas will be tough for many, but let's make sure no-one has to feel alone. Give someone a bell this Christmas. Give them a ring, ring their doorbell or join the Christmas Eve Jingle."

The idea came from Mary Beggs-Reid, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, to "end 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness" in her hometown.

The estate manager, 41, said: "Especially with the recent news, this is more needed now than ever.

"It was just a simple bell-ring to start with but it's evolved into so much more, so that for two minutes on Christmas Eve nobody feels alone."

She was contacted by No 10 after the Prime Minister expressed an interest in ringing bells on Christmas Eve.

How to join the Christmas Eve jingle

Much like Clap For Carers earlier this year, all you need to do to join the campaign is to stand on your doorstep at 6pm on Christmas Eve and ring a bell.

If you don’t have access to a bell, there are plenty of apps you can download to your phone that will make the sound for you.

Thousands of people across the UK will be asked to ring the bells for two minutes on December 24 in a bid to tackle lonlieness.
