Scots to freeze in February in coldest month on record amid amber weather warning

February is set to be the coldest month on record in Scotland after bookies slashed odds as an amber weather warning for snow is issued.

Temperatures could drop to -10C on Monday night in parts of the country as Storm Darcy brings freezing easterly winds which lead to blizzards, snow drifts and treacherous ice.

Leading bookmaker Ladbrokes cut the odds on this winter ending as the coldest since records began in the UK to 1/3 as temperatures continue to drop.

It comes as an amber weather warning for snow has been issued for Tuesday with up to 10 inches of snow expected to build up across the Central Belt.

Snow showers are expected to from Monday night until 9pm tomorrow as weather conditions behind the Beast from the East make a comeback.

The Met Office predicts this spell of freezing and snowy weather could last all month due to pressure between Iceland and Greenland.

January 2021 was the coldest it's been since 2010, with an average temperature of 2.2 °C across the UK.

"It looks as though we're set for a record-breaking cold winter as the odds continue to drop with the temperatures," Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice on Monday along the northern and eastern areas of Scotland as cold air from Russia and Eastern Europe brings a freezing blast.

It comes after snow blanketed much of Scotland as Storm Darcy arrived.

Snow built up the Cairn O' Mount in Aberdeenshire on Sunday night causing a road to be completely blanketed over.

The B974 road from Banchory to Fettercairn was covered in inches of snow following a drift overnight from high winds.

Meanwhile, warmers were forced to take to the streets to plough more than six feet of snow on Sunday following blizzards in Aberdeenshire.

The Met Office warned more wintry snow storms will sweep in from the east and North Sea this week as Storm Darcy hits Scotland.
