Scots to enjoy sunny weekend weather as lockdown travel restrictions ease

Scots will be able to enjoy new freedoms this weekend as restrictions on travel and outdoor meetings are loosened.

The Scottish Government brought forward a series of changes to Scotland’s lockdown on Tuesday after ‘encouraging’ data emerged over the last couple of weeks.

From tomorrow, six Scots from six households will be allowed to meet outdoors for socialising, recreation and exercise.

People will also be able to travel outside of their local authority area for the first time in months as travel restrictions around Scotland are also lifted.

The changes mean that families and friends will be reunited for the first time since lockdown was reimposed in Scotland back in Boxing Day last year.

Speaking at a coronavirus press briefing on Tuesday, Nicola Sturgeon said: “Many of those reunions will be long-awaited, and much anticipated. Please do remember that meeting at this stage must still be outdoors - you cannot socialise in people’s homes - and remember physical distancing.

“Covid is in retreat in Scotland but it hasn’t gone away - it will come back if we allow it. So we must still exercise care and caution, continues to stick to the rules that are in place, work from home if you can and when you do leave the house, remember FACTS.”

Scots will be hoping that the sunshine is on their side this weekend as many taking to parks and gardens across the country.

The good news to bring is that it is expected to largely remain dry across the country this weekend.

But with temperatures only peaking at 13C, it’s hardly taps aff weather.

A forecast from the Met Office for the UK on Friday reads: “Dry with sunny spells and light winds. Windy in the far northwest with a few spots of rain possible.”

And on Saturday to Monday: “Fine and dry for much of England and Wales after the clearance of overnight frost and patchy fog.

“Scotland and Northern Ireland cloudier with rain at times. Mild nights here.”
