Scots to bake in 26C heat as 'Mediterranean plume' descends next week

Scots are set to bake in 26C heat next week as a ‘ Mediterranean plume ’ descends on the country.

The Met Office is anticipating temperatures across much of the country to peak into the mid-20s on Wednesday afternoon.

Sunbathers will be treated to the ideal dry and sunny conditions, with the south west of the country seeing the best of the late summer weather.

Forecasters anticipate the thermostat to climb to a high of 26C in Dumfries at around 4pm on Wednesday.

The Mirror reports that the dramatic change to the conditions is thanks to a so-called ‘Mediterranean plume’ hitting the UK.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “A shift in high pressure does mean that many of us will see sunnier skies and it will also be turning warmer, especially as we head into next week.

“Higher temperatures are on the way, though the weekend and particularly into next week. Many of us will see some September sunshine.”

Scots can expect Sunday to be a washout before the last of the summer sun moves into the country next week.

A band of heavy rainfall is expected to travel in from the west of Scotland from around 1pm before engulfing much of the country later in the evening.

Forecasters say that Monday will be cloudy for most, with a chance of drizzle in parts on the Tuesday.

Despite heavy rainfall drenching Scots over the vast majority of last month, Scotland recorded its fourth hottest summer on record, according to the Met Office.

Glasgow, where the COP26 climate change summit will be held later this year, experienced its hottest summer since 1884.

Met Office experts are anticipating temperatures to climb above average once again towards the end of September.
