Scots teenagers banned from playing National Lottery from today after major gambling rule change

Under-18's will be banned from playing the National Lottery online or buying a lottery ticket from today.

As part of a gambling crackdown, teenagers aged 16 and 17 will no longer be able to play the EuroMillions or buy scratchcards in new rules that come into force today.

Despite gambling currently being illegal for under 18s, National Lottery games could still be played by anybody over the age of 16.

The ban is part of government plans to prevent 16 and 17-year-olds from playing the lottery amid fears as many 55,000 kids are addicted to gambling, reports the Daily Record.

A Lottery spokesman said: "From 22 April 2021, players must be 18 or over to play National Lottery games online, in store and on the app.

"This is in line with the government’s decision to raise the legal minimum age to play The National Lottery, which we fully support.

"Encouraging healthy play is at the heart of everything we do. Remember, you can set limits for the amount you deposit and spend each week, moderate your Instant Win Games play limit or even take a break from playing."

Any 16 or 17-year-olds who have bought a ticket before the rule change will still be eligible to claim their prize if they win after April 22.

Players will have 180 days to claim the prize after the relevant draw and will also have access to their online account until November 30, 2021.

Scots lottery winner Jane Park was just 17 when she scooped a £1 million prize making the youngest UK person to ever win the EuroMillions.
