Scots teen Lily Douglas with rare cancer inspired by Captain Tom Moore to take first steps since last year for charity

A determined young Scot battling a rare form of cancer has been inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise funds for NHS charities by taking steps out of wheelchair for the first time this year.

Lily Douglas, 13, was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, when she was nine-years-old which tragically spread to her brain leaving her unable to walk.

She was left paralysed and unable to move her right side.

Lily Douglas and her mum have set up a Go Fund Me page (Go Fund Me)

Now, after watching the fundraising efforts of Captain Sir Tom Moore, who died aged 100 yesterday, Lily and mum Jane are determined to raise even more money for the NHS.

In a Go Fund Me page, Jane wrote: “Captain Tom you inspired her, we owe everything to the NHS and we are sure Sir Tom would be proud.”

Writing on Facebook, proud mum Jane said: "So, Lily and I have decided in honour of today's sad news about Sir Captain Tom, Lily, who has not walked since last year, is determined to take a few steps on her frame and push through in order to raise much needed money for the NHS.”

The page has already surpassed its target of £500 in less than 24 hours.

Lily was a passionate dancer before she lost the ability to walk.

The teen uses a wheelchair for mobility but has decided to try and take a few steps on her walking frame to raise the money.

She was accepted onto a medical trial at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and makes the 1000 mile journey every second week for treatment.

In less than 24 hours Lily has smashed her fundraising target of £500 and has raised almost £900.
