Scots superstar Calvin Harris sparks debate with viral placenta post

SCOTTISH superstar Calvin Harris has sparked debate after sharing a post announcing the birth of his son.

The Dumfries-born DJ praised his "superhero" wife Vick Hope as he shared a series of photos showing the moments after their home birth.

In the post on Instagram, Harris said: "20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah"

The photos depict Harris holding his son, but he also uploaded a shot of his wife's placenta, alongside images which appeared to show the organ being dehydrated and turned into pills.

Consuming one’s own placenta, known as placentophagia, remains a debated practice with some claiming it offers health benefits.

Fans have offered a mixed reaction to the post, which has since gathered more than 500,000 likes on Instagram.

Some praised Harris for "normalising" the aftermath of childbirth, as one person said: "Congratulations! Thank you for normalising home birth (and placentas!) with these beautiful pictures. What a dream".

And musician Becky Hill responded: "love to see the placenta!! amazing we grow a whole new organ to provide life! good job not wasting it either, that's some goddess magic right there!"

However, others reacted with surprise to the images and questioned whether it was necessary to include the photos without warning.

One fan said: "Congrats [heart emoji] First 2 pics would have been enough tho..."

Another fan said: "A disclaimer about the placenta would've been nice tho!"

Meanwhile, one person commented: "Should've listened to that tweet", referring to a viral post on Twitter/X warning people against viewing the post.

The placenta is an organ made in the womb during pregnancy that gives oxygen and nutrients to a foetus.

It also acts as a filter to protect it from toxins and pollutants.

Some people have claimed that eating the placenta after a baby is born has a range of health benefits for new mothers, a claim which has often been disputed by scientists.

The post has since been hit with an age restriction by Instagram.
