Scots stunned as meteor hurtling to earth fills sky with blue and green flames

A meteor hurtled through the skies over Scotland tonight, treating stargazers to a colourful spectacle.

Spectators reported seeing green and blue flame trails as the rock burned up in the earth's atmosphere, before crashing to the ground.

It was spotted in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayrshire, Perthshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire, as well as England, Wales and Holland.

One onlooker said: "It appeared from nowhere and travelled at speed, losing altitude as it passed."

The UK Meteor Network - @UKMeteorNetwork - Tweeted: "Large #fireball meteor spotted tonight 29 Jan 2022 at 18:48:26 UT from several UKMON cameras."

Una Hogan replied: "Saw this blue tailed fireball on our way from Glasgow to Edinburgh this evening... Looked like it was right in front of us! Spectacular!"

Richie Hancox said: "Saw this in Perthshire, looked to have a bright green tail."

And Timur Tugalev posted: "Saw it over Edinburgh's Holyrood Park. It was Spectacular!"

Gary S said: "Saw it in Paisley!!! Caught it on dashcam too."
