Scots student's campaign to have black history taught in schools

A Scots student has launched a petition calling on the compulsory teaching of black history in schools.

Tobe Amamize, 17, said she was inspired by Black Lives Matter to campaign for kids to be told about the nation’s part in colonialism and slavery.

She said: "The petition was inspired by the response and the recent events that have taken place over the death of George Floyd.

"I'm sure many have seen and have started to see the movements from across the world for Black Lives Matter.

"But for genuine and enduring change there needs to be a change in the education system over how we tackle black history because racism thrives on ignorance.

"You can only fight ignorance through education.

Tobe claims Scotland's failure to acknowledge its racist past is a form of racism in itself.

She said: "We, as a country, have done a really good job of hiding our links to the slave trade and colonialism which is the context for racism.

"It only takes a minute to look around the street names of Glasgow to really see this.

"Our current education system has failed to tackle racism and by educating people of the events including those we are not proud of in our history, we can promote the view of eradicating ignorance.

"As a black Scot I've experienced racism first hand even in school.

"We need to start educating our younger generation so the ignorance can stop."

Tobe added: "I'm calling on the Scottish government to look at the way we teach black history in Scottish school.

"It's glossed over and forgotten about and not studied in depth.

"The new type of racism is that racism doesn't exist here, not even acknowledging that racism is a problem in today's society."
