An Edinburgh Napier university student has died after a tragic fall from the window of his third-floor flat in the city.

Torbjorn Svele Hagen is believed to have been smoking a cigarette and listening to music when he plunged to his death.

The 23-year-old, who was studying Hospitality Management, is thought to have leaned over too far and lost his balance.

The incident took place at Lauriston Gardens in Edinburgh (Google Maps)

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at Lauriston Gardens at around 7:15am on Tuesday, June 1 following a flurry of calls from panicked neighbours.

Police officers and ambulance teams responded to the incident in the tenement near the Meadows but Torbjorn, who is from Drammen, Norway, was declared dead shortly after.

Sources said the student was due to move out on the day of his accident.

A source said: "He was all packed to leave and was smoking out the window when he has somehow fell. Maybe tripped or leaned too far forward and lost his balance. It's a terrible tragedy."

Police have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surround the incident.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: ""Enquiries are ongoing after the death of 23-year-old man in Lauriston Gardens, Edinburgh.

"There are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
