Officers raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 7pm on Friday.

They have now launched an investigation into the incident.

Sergeant Stuart Powell said: “The dog’s owner had been walking in Holyrood Park, when the dog started chasing a bird.

"She was struck by the car on Queens Drive and the driver of the vehicle didn’t stop at the time.

“I would ask any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone with information that may help us identify the vehicle involved to contact officers through 101 quoting reference number 3198 of 9 April.”
