Scots slam Donald Trump in brutal poll ahead of US election

Donald Trump would be snubbed by nearly 90% of Scots if they could vote in the US election, a "scathing" poll from his ancestral home shows.

The embarrassing results of a new survey reveal just 6% of Scots think his time at the White House has had any positive impact on Scotland.

The YouGov survey also suggests the majority think Trump's campaign for re-election has been mostly dishonest, and he's been a "terrible" president.

Trump owns golf resorts near Aberdeen and at Turnberry in Ayrshire. He has always promoted his mother Mary Trump's roots in the Isle of Lewis. She was born on a croft on the island before emigrating to New York aged 18.

Matt Smith, from the polling company, said: "After contracting coronavirus and trailing in the polls throughout October, Donald Trump will be looking for all the good news he can get.

"Unfortunately for the president it will certainly not be coming from his ancestral home of Scotland.

"When asked who they would prefer to emerge victorious in the US election this November, by well over five to one Scots say that they want Trump's Democratic rival Joe Biden to win.

"The Scottish public's take on Trump's time as President is scathing, with three-quarters saying he has been poor or terrible, and majorities too believing he’s had a negative impact both on Scotland and the world more generally."

The results show:

  • 12% would support Trump at the upcoming election.
  • 68% want Joe Biden to win
  • However, 21% aren't sure who they'd support and 22% thought Trump would win regardless.
  • 62% think Trump is a "terrible" president
  • 5% think he’s good and just 2% think he's "great".
  • 72% said Trump’s campaign has been mostly dishonest
  • 61% think Trump's presidency has had some negative impact on Scotland, while 6% said there's been a positive impact.
  • 76% of respondents thing Trump's policies have had a generally negative impact on the rest of the world.

The YouGov poll was based on a survey of 1042 people over the age of 18.
