Scots singer who wrote The Sopranos theme tune dies after taking ill at concert

The Scots musician who co-wrote the theme tune to The Sopranos died after taking ill at a concert.

Jake Black, from the Possil area of Glasgow , lost his fight for life on Tuesday following after being rushed to hospital following the gig on Friday.

The Alabama 3 singer's death was announced on the band's Facebook page last night.

It said: "Early this afternoon, on a beautiful summer's day, our friend, comrade and spiritual teacher, Jake Black AKA The Very Reverend D.Wayne Love, passed over to the higher ground.

"After a magnificent performance at the Highpoint Festival in Lancashire, D.Wayne in his supreme wisdom, decided it was the appropriate moment for his ascension into the next level.

"The transition was painless and peaceful. He was surrounded by brothers Larry Love, L.B. Dope, The Spirit, Jonny Jamm and Sister Therese Mullan.

"We are heartbroken."

Jake's song was picked up by The Soprano's producers (Channel 4)

The band, founded in 1995, recorded dozens of albums, but their song Woke Up This Morning brought them international fame when it was used as the theme tune to the hit US drama, who paid them just £31,000 for the rights.

Bizarrely Black's last words were "Tweet Tweet, Possil Fleet"  - a reference to the infamous gang in the tough neighbourhood of his youth.
