A globally renowned scientist’s career has been brought to an end after child sex abuse images were found on his iPhone.
Dr Paul Andrews was forced to leave his £650,000 family home following the discovery of the vile images and was removed from his role at Dundee University.
Andrews – who carried out groundbreaking research into the world’s first male contraceptive pill, funded by a £900,000 grant from Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates – had material showing abuse at the worst end of the scale.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard police acting on a tip-off discovered the images after a raid on his home in Broughty Ferry.
Andrews’s lawyer Mark Harrower told the court yesterday: “There have been serious consequences for him already. His marriage of 26 years has broken down.
“His relationship with his sons has been affected by his behaviour.”
Sheriff Alison Michie put the 55-year-old on the sex offenders register for 18 months and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
