Scots schoolgirl saved from drowning in swamp by hero passer-by

A hero passer-by who dragged a girl to safety after she started sinking into a swamp has been hailed by a thankful mum as a “gem”.

Hannah Sim, 11, was on a family trip to Woodend pond in Aberdeen when she went into a swampy area and started sinking.

Mum Donna, 41, said: “The more she was standing, the more her feet were sinking. I thought, ‘Oh my God, my bairn is going to drown.’ It was horrendous.”

She had taken her five daughters to the pond to search for tadpoles and Hannah had been told long grass in the pond at Den of Maidencraig Nature Reserve was a good spot to find them.

Donna added: “Before we knew it, her feet started sinking and the water started to rise.”

She sent daughters Mary-Jane, 12, and Skye, nine, to knock on doors nearby and ask them to call the fire brigade but a young man left his house and ran to the pond to help.

Donna said: “He went in and managed to get her out of the mud. What an
absolute gem of a guy – I can’t thank him enough.”
