A schoolboy is fighting for his life in a coma after being hit by a train in a horror accident.
Barry Wallace, 12, from Ayr, is in a critical condition in hospital with swelling on his brain after he was struck at Prestwick Town station shortly after 7pm on Saturday night.
The Ayr Academy first year pupil suffered the serious head injury which saw him rushed to hospital.
Transport cops are now probing the incident.
He remains in a critical but stable condition.
Officers are poring over CCTV of the scene to determine how the boy came into contact with the train.
It’s understood he was struck by a Glasgow-bound ScotRail service as it pulled out of the station around 7.20pm.
Sources stressed the boy was at no point on the tracks.
The incident is being treated as a horrifying accident.
Trains continued to run through Prestwick on Saturday night without stopping.
Normal service was resumed around two hours after the incident.
Prestwick councillor, Hugh Hunter, said: “This was clearly a horrifying incident and my heart goes out to the boy’s family.
“I wish him well on making a speedy recovery.
“Thankfully these incidents are very rare and we will no doubt learn the full extent of the incident once British Transport Police have concluded their investigations.”
A spokesperson for British transport Police said: “Officers were called to Prestwick Town Railway Station after reports of a 12-year-old boy being struck by a train.
“Colleagues from Police Scotland also attended.
“The Scottish Ambulance Service took the young man to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
“The incident is currently being treated as an accident.
