Scots scarecrow festival pays tribute to The Beatles' iconic Abbey Road cover

The residents of McGuire Gate in Bothwell got a little help from their friends this week to create their own take on The Beatles’ iconic Abbey Road album cover.

And the `Abbey Lawn’ entry has been a real eye-catcher with locals, who don’t even need a Ticket To Ride to see the popular Bothwell Scarecrow Festival.

Although, you might get a Day Tripper going on a Long and Winding Road just to see it.

Organisers posted the photograph of the masterpiece and it has since had over 1000 likes and caused many to Twist and Shout around the village!

One said: “Awesome, these guys should stay up permanently.”

And another commented : “By far the best we saw Yesterday on our drive about!”

If you haven’t caught the Abbey Road scarecrow yet don’t worry, it’s there Eight Days A Week.

The Bothwell community are hosting their ninth annual scarecrow festival, and has dozens of effigies, including one of North Korean dictator Kim Jung-un.

Last year’s event saw over 450 scarecrows displayed, with 30 events and 30,000 followers making it the biggest yet.

And the festival have a number of new events and activities planned , as well as some firmly-established favourites such as the comedy night, football tournament and a 5k and 10k fun run.

Organisers have said that with the support of sponsors and everyone in the community, they can make 2019 the best one yet.

Over the years residents have created fabulous scarecrows, including some that have proven controversial.

US President Donald Trump has made a few appearances over recent years and has now been joined by the North Korean dictator, who he has met in a number of summits.

The village kicked off the ninth festival last Saturday, September 7, with the Scarecrow Festival Football Tournament.

That was then followed by the On Road Cycle Ride and Challenge Ride and 5k and 10k fun run on Sunday, September 8.

The week is full of different things but the Grand Scarecrow Parade will take place on Sunday, September 17, followed by an afternoon of fun as the playground goes ‘down on the farm’ with live entertainment, a games zone and much more.

And this year, organisers are opening up the Super Scarecrow Street competition to a street, part of a street or any community group that would like to enter.

In addition to having buskers playing ‘unplugged’ around the village throughout the weekend, they will also have a small festival stage where bands and acts will be performing live sets on Saturday, September 15.

Organiser Joe Mulholland is really looking forward to this year’s event. He said: “The planning and set-up is going fantastically.

“We have lots of exciting new things this year, one of our new sponsors M&D’s are bringing their road train along to use as a park and ride, which is fantastic.

“It has always been our aim to cater for everyone. We have so many different things happening that everyone of any age can enjoy. It’s a community-wide event and there is a real buzz about the place.”

He added: “And of course the scarecrows are coming thick and fast and the efforts have been outstanding already – they really are a work of art.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has helped and taken part, to all our sponsors and also a special thanks to Jumbo Gibson for organising the music festival.”
