Scots roads fitted with new hi-tech speed cameras to help catch rule-breaking drivers

Speeding motorists in Scotland's central belt face a new crackdown from hi-tech enforcement cameras.

Transport Scotland has splashed out £500,000 on the distinctive yellow “Spot” cameras, which are mounted on yellow gantries and work in a different way to regular speed cameras.

The devices use an invisible infra-red light combined with number plate recognition to detect motorists speeding on normal roads or running red lights, and “amber gamblers” who speed up on approach to junctions.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “Each camera type is able to perform only the function that it has Home Office Type Approval for, in this case the enforcement of speed restrictions.”
