Scots reject Haggis as majority is now sold in England and Wales

The majority of haggis is now sold in England and Wales - not Scotland.

The Burns Night speciality is now becoming prevalent in vegetarian forms as well as the traditional version, containing sheep's heart, liver and lungs.

Scots butcher Simone Howie recorded booming sales down south, with 60 per cent sold in England and Wales.

The company is preparing 1.2 million haggis, a 200,000 increase in last year's sales.

January is the busiest month of the year for the butcher, based in Perthshire .

Simon Howie said: "We are absolutely delighted with sales so far this January and are working round the clock to deliver the 1.2 million haggis forecast for Burns."

James Lamont buying manager, Local Sourcing at Tesco, said: "While haggis is known as the national dish of Scotland - it's been the case for quite some time that more haggis are sold in England than Scotland each year and that Burns Night is very much a nationally celebrated event - and not just by Scots living South of the border."
