Scots RAF jets scrambled for second time in four days after 'unidentified' aircraft approaches UK skies

RAF fighter jets have been launched from their Scots base after an "unidentified aircraft" approached the UK skies.

Two Typhoons took off from RAF Lossiemouth just before noon for the unscheduled operation.

They are being supported by a Voyager aircraft from RAF Brize Norton.

The quick alert reaction was launched due to the unidentified aircraft approaching the UK airspace over the North Sea.

It has been reported that the fighter jets headed north-east of Shetland and then headed south.

A RAF spokesman said: "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth have been launched today against unidentified aircraft approaching the UK area of interest.

"We will not be offering additional detail until the mission is complete."

They later added: "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth were launched today against a Russian aircraft approaching the UK area of interest, however, the aircraft turned away and no intercept was required.’

This operation is the second one in four days for the RAF crew at the Moray base.

We told how two Russian anti-submarine aircraft were intercepted and monitored on Friday by Typhoon fighter jets.

Crews shadowed the planes and took pictures of them while they moved through the UK's area of interest.

The RAF Lossiemouth base is vital in protecting the skies about the country, with Typhoon jet crews always ready to respond to potential threats approaching the north.

These usually consist of Russian aircraft who do not identify themselves when flying through.
