Scots RAF jets scrambled as 'unidentified aircraft' approaches UK

Fast jets from a Scots RAF base have been scrambled after an 'unidentified aircraft' approached the UK.

The Typhoon fighters from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray are currently operating under a quick reaction alert.

An RAF spokesman told the Record that an 'unidentified aircraft' was approaching a 'UK area of interest' and they would not comment further until the mission was complete.

There have been a massive number of forays from Russian military planes entering British airspace over the North Sea.

In November, we told of how the Lossiemouth jets were scrambled after Russian submarine hunting aircraft were spotted.

Dramatic pictures were taken of the Russian planes as they were intercepted by the RAF crews.

It was reported that other NATO allies also helped monitor the planes.

An RAF spokesman said of today's incident: “Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth were scrambled today against unidentified aircraft approaching the UK area of interest.

"We will not be offering additional detail until the mission is complete"

The news comes as Poseidon sub hunting planes at the base launched their first test missiles into the sea.

RAF Lossiemouth tweeted today: "A RAF #Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft based at @RAFLossiemouth has released a torpedo for the first time."
