Scots prisoner flew into rage and spat in warden's face after finding fluff in cell

A prisoner who flew into a rage because there was fluff in his cell has been jailed for seven months.

Grant Gibb, 20, began throwing things around, and when a warder looked in see what was going on, Gibb spat in his face.

Gibb, of Larkhall, Lanarkshire, appeared at Falkirk Sheriff Court by video link and admitted assaulting the jailer.

The incident occurred on February 9th, 2020, at Polmont Young Offenders' Institution, Stirlingshire.

Prosecutor Katie Cunningham said: "There was clearly something going on and the prison officer went to the cell door to speak to the accused, who spat towards him, striking him on the face."

Other officers saw, and Gibb was placed on report and moved to the prison's segregation unit.

Solicitor Mary-Ellen Scobbie, defending, said: "He was trying to clean his room and advises that a small piece of fluff kept floating about.

"He kept seeing it. This piece of fluff seemed to frustrate and agitate him and he proceeded to start smashing items in his cell.

"When the prison officer opened up the hatch on his door, he spat. He fully understands he shouldn't have done it."

She said Gibb had been suffering from "episodes of psychosis".

Imposing the seven month jail term, Sheriff Christopher Shead said: "A custodial sentence is appropriate."
