Scots prison officer tests positive for coronavirus as jail block goes into lockdown

A Scots jail block has been locked down after a prison guard tested positive for Covid-19.

An officer at HMP Low Moss prison, near Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, became unwell and tests yesterday have now confirmed that they have the virus.

It is understood that almost 50 of the worker’s colleagues are now self-isolating as a precaution while additional staff have been brought into the prison.

Inmates who had close contact with the sick guard are also being kept in their cells.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said: “Contingency plans are in place to deal with situations like this.

“We will be following the actions of this plan which includes self isolation as a precaution and testing is also available.”

Meanwhile, physical visits from family members and friends of prisoners at HMP Grampian in Peterhead have been suspended “until further notice”.

The move came after Nicola Sturgeon reintroduced lockdown rules in Aberdeen after a spike of Covid-19 cases linked back to the hospitality industry.
