An MP has told ministers to take urgent action after it emerged primary school children have been caught watching porn on mobile phones.
Stephen Flynn, who represents Aberdeen South, said he knew of three separate incidents in recent months where staff had to deal with the website PornHub being viewed on phones in school.
Flynn has challenged the UK Government to force such sites to introduce age verification checks to stop youngsters getting access.
The SNP politician spoke of his “profound concern” that children were able to access the site in a discussion on new legislation designed to protect children from harmful content online.
He said: "A constituent of mine in Aberdeen has been in contact to say that in recent months they've had to respond to a number of instances, three instances, of children in primary school accessing PornHub on mobile phones.
"Now I'm sure the Secretary of State will share my profound concern in this regard, but we don't want warm words, we want action. So can he confirm if and when online age verification checks will finally be put in place?"
Digital, culture, media and sport secretary Oliver Dowden shared Flynn's concern and branded the ease with which children were able to access porn a “complete outrage”.
Dowden said: "Well as a father of primary age school children I share his complete outrage that that is possible.
"This legislation will address exactly that - a site like Pornhub will fall within the scope of this legislation, because it has a large amount of user-generated content.
"We will expect them to take appropriate measures to safeguard children from accessing that site and if they fail to do so, they will face very severe consequences."
